Hey all, I need help on my wyvern. How should the reach/speed bonus be for its poisonous scorpion like sting?

Also I need stats on a huge grasping bite, and huge talons, should they be claws?

You have to imagine on the stinger, I think the stinger on a scorpion is fairly slow, compared to a weapon, but the stinger on a wasp (a flying animal) is very fast.

I'm not sure how big a Wyvern is supposed to be but I would guess a Grizzly bears bite would probably be pretty close, if that is too small just bump it up one increment, 2-12 becomes 2-16 or 2-16 becomes 3-18 etc.

I would think the claws on a Wyvern would be like birds talons, thus quite powerful (one size category higher than the actual beast) like a bird of prey though again, you could base it on various other animals. Claws on reptiles are usually quite weak.

I think even a relatively small (bear sized) Wyvern would be pretty scary and formidable!

Hmmm, I not sure If I want it to be L or H size. An H size is really beyond fighting to be honest, so perhaps L. An L size wyvern could not just swoop down and take you off to your death.

I've decided to go L size!

So what would large size talons do? 1-8?

1-8 sounds reasonable to me

I like it, quite formidable. Especially with the very good armor. That would be a very nasty opponent to encounter in a dark alley.

What kind of players are going up against it? How are they equipped?

Well it is just a base monster but I am going to use it on my Cwyth campaign, so Highland scot/Irish, with mail hauberk-shirt, claymores, bardiches, and an excellent archer.

This is one of the two species of Wyverns I'm using in my campaign. Given that there's already a Wyvern thread, I figured I'd post it here(I do use a few HarnMaster stats in my game because I don't like Wisdom being a part of senses). I also don't know if I'm doing the Grapple column right or not.

Coastal Wyvern
Large Dragon (CR still being tested)
Habitat: Temperate or Cold Coastal
Size: 12 Ft Length, 18 Ft Wingspan, 300 pounds Space/Reach: 10 Ft/5 Ft
Activity Cycle: Diurnal Lifespan: 40 years Diet: Carnivore
Organization: Solitary, Pair, or Flight (3–6) .

Abilities: Str 25(+7), Dex 11, Con 18(+4), Int 2(-4), Wis 3(-4), Cha 9(-1), Eye 19(+4), Hrg 15(+2), Sml 17(+3), Bld 0
Hit Points: 52 hp (18 Con, +8 from 7 HD, x2 size)
Speed: 20 ft., fly 60 ft. (Average)
Initiative: +0
Martial Points: 8(5 Natural Attacks, -1 Size, +1 Multiattack)
Saves: Fort +9, Ref +5, Will +1
Skills: Listen +10(5 ranks, +3 Hrg, +2 Alertness), Spot +19(10 ranks, +4 Eye, +2 Alertness, +3 racial) , Swim +12(5 ranks, +7 str)
Feats: Ability Focus(Poison), Alertness, Power Dive, Multi-attack(B)
Special Qualities: Low Light Vision, Darkvision 60 Ft, Immune to Sleep and Paralysis effects, Scent.
Advancement: 8-9(Large) .
Defenses: +6 (-1 Size)
Armor: DR 6/- (Natural Armor, Bypass -10)
BAB/Grapple: +7/+18
Bite, Grasping: O: +13(+7 Str, -1 Size); M: +16(+7 Str, -1 Size, +3 Spd); G: +27(+7 Str, +4 Size, +3 Spd, +6 Grp); Dmg: 1d8+7 Piercing
Claws(2): O: +14(+4 Str, -1 Size, +3 Reach); M: +15(+4 Str, -1 Size, +5 Spd); G: +26(+4 Str, +4 Size, +5 Spd, +6 Grp); Dmg: 1d6 Slashing
Sting: O: +16(+7 Str, -1 Size, +3 Reach) M: +15(+7 Str, -1 Size, +2 Spd); G: +26(+7 Str, +4 Size, +2 Spd, +6 Grp); Dmg: 1d6 Piercing + Poison
Power Dive(Slam): Onset Only: +11(+4 Str, -1 Size, +2 Reach); Dmg: 1d4+11 Bludgeoning
Special Attacks:
Improved Grab(Ex): When the wyvern hits with both of its claws it may attempt to start a grapple without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it succeeds, it may sting or bite.
Poison(Ex): DC 20(10 + 4 ½ HD + 4 Con + 2 Ability Focus), initial and secondary damage 2d6 Con.
Power Dive(Ex): Only usable on targets smaller than the Wyvern, the Wyvern dives at his foe attempting an overrun, with the only change being that the target can’t choose to avoid. If the attack is successful and it would knock the opponent down, it gets to make a standard claw attack as well as an additional one die slam attack with the bonuses and damage listed above. Additional MP may be spent to increase the effectiveness of this attack.

This is the smaller of the two Wyvern species for my campaign. It should also be noted that for much of the year, they hunt in packs. They also don't like the taste of their own venom(or anything killed by it, as per the article Ecology of the Wyvern in Dragon Annual #1) and that should be taken into account by DMs using the Wyvern. I didn't give them any sort of Wing buffet attack because the wings are just too fragile to be used effectively in combat.

That looks like a scary beast, tough to deal with!
