I'm not suggesting that, I just can't necessarily use the rule in the core rules unless it's really simple, so in this case I'd leave it out (and it's perfectly ok to use as a house rule, this sort of thing works if you are used to playing this way)

I think the their needs to be some sort of rule for maintaining though, otherwise mounted combat gets weird.

So its not the rule you disagree with, just the method of keeping track? To be honest I don't see how it would be hard to remember, you just have to remember how fast you were going last round, each player should be able to remember that I think. Only problem would be keeping track of a lot of NPC's but thats just DM bitch work as far as I'm concerned. (Things we do for love :D )

I have come up with a different base rule for this system. Instead of requiring you to remember the speed you were already going and maintain, you must now accelerate every round. This means that to go X2 you must spend 2 dice (1 movement die and 1 normal die). To go X5 would take all of your dice (normally). This system takes care of the memory problem, and gives an advantage to chargers.
