Perhaps, weapons with a reach bonus of 7 have a 10' reach and can be used like normal polearms, meaning they can be used at melee, and you can use the pole arm fighting mf with them. Pole arms greater than that can't?

I think maybe there should be two categories, one weapon size / type which is at a minus to be used at melee, and one which cant.

Like maybe for a 12' spear you have to spend at least two dice to use it at melee range. So lower level fighters wouldn't be able to.

Or perhaps just require the feat, half staff or pollaxe fighting or something.

Wouldn't negative speed bonus's take care of that?

Ya, negative speed bonus would be the same, just make some weapons have a speed bonus of -, which means they can't be used at melee.

Or just give them like -10 in which case ... you wouldn't want to use them in melee but you still could if you say spent a couple three or four dice and / or had some suitable MF, which I like better... it's more flexible that way.

Problem is, I don't see how a pike can stab someone at melee range at all.
Additionally, I think that a pike shouldn't be able to hit at onset even, still seems too close.

A 20' pike, I kind of agree, although there are some manuals, (I think English) which have a whole system for fighting with "long staves" of a similar length which may surprise you. I'll have to see if I can find that to post here.

But the 20' pike and the 18' lance are the only two I can think of which would have this restriction. Many pikes and lances were much shorter, in the neighborhood of 9-12', and a 12' staff can most definitely be used to fight at short range if you know what you re doing.

Yes.... though they both cover really the whole range from 12'-18'. I should probably make two sub-types.
