Armor Proficiencies

Postby Daeruin » Mon Nov 05, 2012 3:14 am

I was looking over the armor charts in Codex and noticed that they aren't classified as being light/medium/heavy. How do you know which armor proficiency feats apply to each armor type?

Half/ Medium/ Full corresponds to light, medium, heavy. You may do it differently if you like, but that is an easy and quick way.

That's what I was thinking, except then I saw that the half armor list includes the peascod cuirass, which gives a higher DR than most medium and full armor for less money. That made me wonder if I was missing something.

Regardless, one piece of armor shouldn't restrain you that much

It has a high DR but the lower bypass.

The difference between Codex armor rules and SRD is that in the SRD, the armor is always the same coverage, so they are just breaking it down by effectiveness of the armor and bulk of the armor. (in the 3.5 players handbook the illustration of the 'breast plate' was an entire suit of armor covering the legs and arms as well as the torso).

In the Codex you also have coverage (bypass) so that is another really important factor.

For example a helmet has a very high DR but they bypass is easy (like -1 IIRC).

Does that seem reasonable?

Yes, that makes sense. I wasn't looking at the Bypass values.

Bypass is the most important stat. It changes everything. A breastplate will usually just be ignored, but a bypass of 6-10 is very difficult to get around.
