I was considering buying it but then I realised that they added new cover art which is in the WotC dungeonpunk style. Oh :( .

Is this first as in AD&D or 1st as in white books?

It's OD&D Whitebox.

They reprinted 2nd ed too.

Looks like they noticed all the old school blogs and decided to cater to their readers.

Hahahah yeah that's been my thought... have heard very little about it

The old white book game is fun for large parties with high mortality rate, if you are willing to play it that way.

I had a quick look at one of the "DnD Next" playtest rules and they just seem to be trying to essentially make all of the rules sets compatible as plug-and-play modules. In other words codifying what most of us have always done by house ruling the living daylights out of our preferred version by stealing something we might like from a different version. So I'm not really all that impressed, but at least it allows them a way to re-include the d20 crowd and modified 1st Edition types while allowing for 4e-style play, for those who actually liked that (my group unanimously hated 4e, but there were a few little things we did like about it and have since integrated into modified-1e rules we play under for one of our games).

Sounds like they are kind of doing a holding action trying not to lose market share

Lol! WotC has been so RPG dominant for so long, though. I rather hope games like Pathfinder end up, finally, heavily biting into their share. More than a few games have grabbed a niche in the market but part of me really wants to see the younger games branch out a bit more and see what else is really out there. Time for them to pick up Codex Martialis!
