Why not a bind on any successful active defense using your weapon bonus?

Because it doesn't happen that often or that predictably. You may 'bind' any time the weapons touch but you probably won't be able to exploit it.

But they won't bind everytime due to a lack of dice anyway.

Maybe binds were much more common historically, given the amount of emphasis on binding from the old masters. I'm sure they were much better at it than we are.

Well, maybe we can include that as an optional rule. You can obviously use it for your own campaigns. I like the tie roll rule.

I think what characterizes the Masters was more that they could exploit a bind than they could always get them; in fact the fechtbucher advise you not to bind when fighting with a Master if you can help it and recommend strategies (zucken and so on) to avoid the bind when fighting them.
