Fight #2 round 3

The cunning Hobgoblin, though angered by his injury and tempted to go all out, elects to continue to cautiously snipe at Lukas, and tries another one-die attack.

Lukas, sweating now as he sense the end is near, tries to match the attacks one by one.

H 4+7=11
L 3+1+10=14

Blocked! The Hobgoblin grimly tries another thrust...

H 1
L 8+

The Hobgoblin has rolled a natural 1, which generates an automatic counter-attack. Lukas has two dice left and now begins his own careful series of cuts and thrusts.

The Hobgoblin, grinning an evil grin through sharp teeth, thrust a second time, but was overzealous in his lunge, and groped awkwardly for a fraction of a second trying to bring his halberd back into line. This was the only opening Lukas needed, and he immediately cut at the beasts forearm with his longsword, as the Hobgoblins triumphant sneer fell into a look of almost comical dismay

L 19+8=27
H 16+8=24

Hit! Damage is D12, a 4+3 =7 -3 for the Armor DR, is 4

Lukas still has a die left and the Hobgoblin is out of dice, so this one goes against his passive defense.

The first cut opened up a wound on the creatures forearm, the beast was stunned as Lukas cut a dopplehau back 'round again, this time aiming for it's corded neck

L 9 + 8=17

Hit! Damage is D12 a 9+3 =11 - 3 for the Armor =9

The second Hobgoblin is dead.

The blade cut deep into the beasts throat, lodging for a moment in it's spine. A weakened and half-stunned Lukas struggled for a bit to wrench his blade free, and began to wipe it off, confused momentarily by his own blood which kept dripping on the blade, mixing with that of the hobgoblin.

Thats when the third Hobgoblin, attracted by the noise, clambered up the bank of the creek bed.

Fight # 3, round 1

Initiative roll

Lukas 15 +6 =21
Hobgoblin 18+1=19

Lukas wins initiative. With one HP remaining, he knows he can't survive any long exchanges or risk a counterattack. With a half crazed yell, he puts all four dice into one stupendous cut. Alarmed, the Hobgoblin elects to spend all three of his dice on defense.

Lukas 7,11,15,16 Keeps 16 16+10=26
Hobgoblin 9, 15, 16 Keeps 16 16+ 8=24

Hit! 4+3=7, -3 (armor) =4

The Hobgoblin has 18 hit points left.

The Hobgoblin raised his Halberd just in time to fend off the mighty blow of the crazed human in his path, but pain in his head told him he hadn't blocked it completely and was cut on his scalp. He would make the human pay! gnaw his bones while he yet lived!

Fight #3, round 2

Lukas still has the initiative. He decides to go all out again with another desperate chop, this time with a bypass attempt (-4 on the to hit die roll)

The Hobgoblin, now having perceived the desperately wounded condition of his opponent, elects to make a two-dice defense, preserving one to attack.

Lukas: 4, 12, 14, 20
Hobgoblin: 4, 17

Lukas rolled a natural 20 which means an automatic critical hit. This is added to the damage. Critical hit damage for a chop attack is an extra D10. So he rolls a D12 and a D10, a 7 and a 10 respectively for 17+3 =20

The third Hobgoblin is dead

Snarling in insane rage, Lukas cut a perfect zwerchau and severed the Hobgoblins head in one stroke. Unsteady on his feet, he paused for a moment as the headless body fell to the ground to ascertain if any of the main group had heard the sounds of strife, but hears nothing.

After waiting what seemed an eterenity expecting certain death, he finally took a breath and came to the unlikely conclusion that he just might live through the day after all. With a look of shocked amazement, the ragged, bloody man slips down into the gully of the stream bed and makes his way grimly toward the neighboring town, leaving the mutilated corpses of Hobgoblin sergeants behind him....

A tough encounter sho nuff, he was definitely a little lucky with the dice to survive that... worth 3600 xp according to this thing!

Hi!

This combat was so cool. It was really easy, as the reader, to picture what was happening.

So how would this fight have been resolved in standard v3.5?

Basically, given the feats each side had etc., it would have been each combattant striking once per round, at a static armor class, doing standard damage if they hit. A gradual whittling down of each fighter until one was dead. Attrition warfare basically.

I doubt our Landsknecht could have finished off each of the Hobgoblins in time, though to be honest he was very lucky to survive all three fights using the codex system.

If I get some time tomorrow I'll run an example of the same fight (or at least, the first of the three battles) using standard 3.5 rules.
