Lukas is having a very bad day. His town came unexpectedly under siege this morning by an army of Hobgoblin raiders who rode out of the Eastern hills at dawn. He was part of a small party which volunteered to sneak out through the lines and seek help from the neighboring town, and warn the people of the region to take up arms.

Lukas and his friends were spotted by a Hobgoblin patrol, and chased into a small patch of forest. His two companions were cut down before his eyes, but he managed to hide and evade capture.

The Hobgoblin Captain was not sure if there was another human hiding in the thicket or not, but being thorough and suspicious by nature he posted sentries around the perimeter and is now going through with his men beating the brush to find any hold-outs.

Lukas has evaded the main group and made it to the edge of the wood, but his way is blocked by two Hobgoblin sentries standing about 200 yards apart, and he knows from observing them that a third is waiting a little way down the creek bed that he plans to use as his means of escape. They are within earshot of each other but too far to be heard by the main force of Hobgoblins, so if he could kill each sentry quickly in succession before they could unify or flee, he knows he could make his escape. But these look like pretty tough Hobgoblins, not your ordinary foot soldier, but trusted veterans armed with large deadly looking halberds and clad in scale armor. Lukas was visiting family in the village and is unarmored, though well armed.

Lukas is a tough fighter who has been in many scrapes, but he knows this will be a close run thing. Once he makes his move, there can be no stopping: he will have to kill all three in fairly quick succession or he will be doomed. Setting his teeth and taking a deep breath, he licks his lips, clutches his trusty longsword and prepares himself for the fight of his life.

Lukas steps out from behind a tree and moves purposefully toward the Hobgoblin.

Round 1

Lukas Init roll: 11 +6 = 17
Hobgoblin A. Init roll: 11+ 1 = 12

Lukas opens with a 3 dice mastercut, making a bypass attempt. Lukas rolls a 12, a 15, and an 18. Keeps the 18.

Hobgoblin Sgt. Amato makes a 2 dice active defense. A 15 and a 3. Keeps the 15.

Lukas opens the attack with a powerful zornhau, a diagonal downward cut from the wrath guard...

Lukas highest die roll is an 18. Add +10 for his longsword onset To Hit bonus =28, -4 for attempting to bypass the Hobgoblins scale vest armor. The modified number is 24.

Hobgoblin A. rolled a 15. Plus 8 for defense with the Halberd = 23. Lukas has hit, barely.

Hit . Lukas rolls damage: 5 + 3 =8 damage. Hobgoblin A is wounded, has 12 Hp left.

A vicious cut across the Hobgoblins left shoulder....

Lukas elects to hold his second Martial Pool die in reserve for a counterstroke. Hobgoblin is his dodge target.

They are still at Onset range, so the Hobgoblin still gets his Onset To Hit bonus (+10):

He rolls a 13+10 =23. Because Lukas made a Miesterhau this has to beat his earlier attack roll, which was 24. Miss.

This triggers Lukas counterstrike roll, and his free dice. So he gets two dice:he rolls a 6 and a 3. Keeps the 6. At Melee range now so +8, for a 14. This is against the Hobgoblins passive defense of 11. Hit.

Hit. Damage is D12, a 10 +3 is 13, a massive blow, this does not bypass armor though so the armor DR applies -3. Damage is 10.

As the Hobgoblin tries to thrust, Lukas goes soft at the bind and twitches round to the other side and hacks deep into the Hobgoblins back.

The hobgoblin is severely wounded with 2 HP remaining.

This is brilliant -- just what I was looking for.

At the end of this -- could you post the non-Codexed version of the combats? Just what would happen under standard 3.5?

Sure Ian I'll do that, might take a little while to get to. I'm going to try to finish this combat example tonight. Then in later days I'll add other examples with other types of characters, including some from the campaign we are running hopefully (I'm going to try recording some combats)

Round 2

Lukas goes first again, knowing it's only a matter of time before the second Hobgoblin sees them fighting, decides to go all out to finish his opponent off with a four dice attack.

Hobgoblin elects to use two dice for Defense again,:

Lukas rolls badly: 2, 3, 3, 5 Best roll is a 5. Plus 8 (melee)=13.

Hobgoblin rolls: 1, 15. Keeps the 15. Add 10 he easily blocks Lukas blow.

Lukas strikes two handed shietelhau straight down at the wounded Hobgoblin, but he reads the attack and blocks easily holding his halberd up like a staff and ....

Hogboblin now attacks with his remaining die: 18 + 7 (melee)= 25. This is compared to Lukas passive defense of 14+1 (dodge)=15. Hit!

Hit. Damage is 11 + 3=14.

...counters with a devestating cut to Lukas chest, wounding him severely.

Meanwhile the other Hobgoblin makes a spot check to notice the battle going on, DC is 12. He rolls 8+2 =10. He didn't notice but every round the combat continues the DC will get easier by 2 points.

His initial rush of confidence checked, Lukas, sobered by the pain of what could have been a fatal cut if he hadn't moved almost completely out of the way, focuses his attention for the next attack, he can't take another hit like that.

Round 3

Lukas Changes tactics, and tries a two-dice attack.

The Hobgoblin sticks with his 2 dice defense strategy.

Lukas rolls a 1 and a 12. Keeps the 12 + 8 (melee)=20
The Hobgoblin rolls a 6 and a 9. Keeps the 9 +8 (defense) =17

A hit. Lukas rolls damage 3+ 3=6.

The first Hobgoblin is dead.

Concentrating carefully, Lukas makes a cut at the injured Hobgoblins leg, and hacks deep into the meat of his thigh. Overcome by pain, the creature falls over

Second Hobgoblin makes his spot check. 4 + 2 =6

Fight #2, Round 1

Lukas now attempts to sneak up on the second Hobgoblin. [a little Deus Ex Machina here because I want to demonstrate another fair fight, i want to see how it goes myself, I'm actually rolling all these dice as i write this] He manages to approach within a short distance before the beast spots him, and with a grunt, lowers his Halberd into a defensive guard.

Lukas Init Roll: 8 +6 = 14
Hobgoblin B. Iniit roll: 17 + 1 =18

Hobgoblin has initiative.

Snarling with rage, the Hobgoblin steps forward and thrusts his Halberd viciously.

A two die attack.

Lukas elects to make a three dice defense, and sets the Hobgoblin as his dodge target.

Hobgoblin rolls: 7 and 18. Keeps the 19 + 11 (onset) = 29

Lukas rolls: 6, 7 and 18. Keeps the 18 +1 (dodge) +10 (defense) =29

A tie. This means the Hobgoblin has hit Lukas weapon. Damage is 6+3 =9

Consulting this table in the SRD I see that Lukas sword as a two handed sword has a hardness of 10 and 10 hit points. So the sword is not damaged.

The Hobgoblin strikes a vicious blow down at Lukas head, but he parries it with his sword making a ringing !clang! fortunately his supple blade survives the impact.

The Hobgoblin elects to make another attack, and Lukas, nervous after his wound, decides to use his last die for active defense.

Hobgoblin rolls a 7 + 7 (as this is his second attack in the round, he uses his melee bonus now instead of his onset) = 15

Lukas rolls a 6 + 1 (dodge) + 10 (defense) =17, he evades the blow.

The first titanic cut is followed by a second backswing, but Lukas displaces this easily, preparing for his next move...

Fight #2, Round 2

Hobgoblin still has initiative, so he attacks, this time he elects to try a one -die attack.

Lukas makes a cautious one -die defense.

Hobgoblin rolls a 14+7=21
Lukas rolls a 7 +1 (dodge) + 10 (defense) =18

Hit! Damage is 3+3 =6

Lukas has 8 Hp left.

Pressing his advantage, the Hobgoblin jabs Lukas with the point of the halberd in his shoulder, drawing blood...

Hobgoblin decides to make another one die attack. Lukas, getting worried, mounts a two-die defense.

Hobgoblin rolls an 8+7=15
Lukas rolls a 3, and a 14. Keeps the 14+1+10=25

Blocked, but the Hobgoblin, smelling blood, elects to spend his last die on another attack. Lukas decides to take a big risk and use passive defense, setting up his counterstroke feat.

Hobgoblin rolls a 9+7=16 Lukas passive defense is 14 +1 (dodge) =15.

...he strikes in rapid succession, the second is set aside, but the third makes it past his guard, and opens up another wound in his side, grating against his ribs...

Hit! damage is 4+3=7. Lukas has one hit point left!

..but lukas struck back, driving the point of his own sword into the beasts chest, hard enough for the point to punch through the armor...

With his last die, plus his free dice, Lukas strikes, a 17 and a 19. The Hobgoblins passive defense is 11.

Hit! damage is 10+3 -3 for the armor=10.

The Hobgoblin is rocked by a severe blow as well, and is down to 8 hit points.
